In the Loving Memory of Mansraj

The Hiran Minar, lies several kilometers outside Lahore in Sheikhupura. The minaret was built as a monument to the Mogul emperor Jahangir's beloved pet deer named Mansraj. There is an octagonal pavilion opposite to the minaret with a moat around it, which served as a watering hole for the animals in the nearby forest. The entire estate belonged to Jahangir as a prince. The nearby city and the district of Sheikhupura are thus named after him, as Akbar used to call him Sheikhu.
